President Donald Trump announced that Elon Musk will lead a new review of public spending. Now, he will focus on the Department of Education and the Pentagon. According to Trump, Musk could uncover “hundreds of billions” in unnecessary expenses.

The Department of Education and the Pentagon have enormous budgets. In 2024, the former received $79.1 billion, while the latter obtained $841.4 billion. These amounts have raised concerns about possible waste.

The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) was created to reduce government spending. So far, it has audited several federal agencies. Recently, it attempted to dismantle the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), but a federal judge temporarily halted the process.

Supporters of this measure argue that reducing spending will allow for a more efficient management of public resources. They claim that eliminating unnecessary expenses will create a more agile government focused on key priorities without compromising essential services.
