President Proposes U.S. Control Over Gaza, Stirring Debate on Palestinian Displacement and Rights.
On Monday, President Donald Trump warned that he could withhold aid to Jordan and Egypt if they refuse to accept displaced Palestinians from Gaza. This statement reinforces his plan for the United States to “take control” of Gaza and “own” the region to rebuild it. The plan involves relocating Gaza’s residents to a “permanent place” during the process.
When a journalist asked if he would cut aid to Egypt and Jordan, Trump replied, “Yes, maybe, sure, why not?” This response came after both countries refused to accept the Palestinians. King Abdullah II of Jordan is set to meet with Trump in Washington on Tuesday.
In a later interview, Fox News host Bret Baier asked Trump if displaced Palestinians would have the right to return to Gaza. Trump responded, “No, they wouldn’t, because they will have much better housing.” He also emphasized that a “permanent place” would be built for them.
The president also expressed his hope for a “deal” with Egypt and Jordan. He stated that the United States provides “billions of dollars” in aid to both countries. In 2023, the U.S. allocated nearly $1.7 billion to Jordan and $1.5 billion to Egypt.
In another matter, Trump made comments about the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas. He warned that “hell will break loose” if Hamas does not release the remaining Israeli hostages by noon on Saturday. This follows Hamas announcing a delay in the release of three Israeli hostages, citing Israeli gunfire and a lack of aid.
Meanwhile, on Tuesday, UN Secretary-General António Guterres urged the avoidance of hostilities resuming. Through a post on X, Guterres called on Hamas to comply with the ceasefire agreement and release the hostages as planned.
