Over 65,000 Employees Have Accepted the Offer, but Unions Challenge the Measure
President Donald Trump introduced an incentive program for federal employees who choose to resign voluntarily. So far, more than 65,000 workers have accepted the offer. However, a federal judge has extended the deadline following union lawsuits questioning the plan’s legality.
Developed with the advice of Elon Musk, the program offers financial compensation to those who leave their positions before September 30. However, unions and Democratic lawmakers have raised concerns about the legality of the process and the government’s ability to fulfill its promised payments.
Judge George O’Toole Jr. temporarily halted the plan’s implementation and scheduled a hearing for next Monday to hear arguments from both sides.
The Trump administration argues that this measure aims to efficiently reduce the size of the federal government. However, worker representatives warn that the plan lacks transparency and could threaten job stability for thousands of employees.
